John 14:29

There is an old joke. If someone could really see the future then why do they not win the lottery? Jesus is telling them something that will take place. He does not want them to be hurt by His leaving. He wants their faith strengthened even though he is leaving and going to the Father. The compassion Jesus has for His disciples always strikes me . He is genuinely concerned for them, especially in this time of His death. Remember that the same Jesus has compassion on you. He loves His people with a perfect love.

John 14:28

Jesus is speaking about the Father. There is a false idea that God changes from one form to another. In this false idea, The Father becomes the Son and then the Holy Spirit and back again. The Bible is clear this is wrong! There are three distinct persons in the Trinity. Jesus is going to be with the Father and they will be there together. It is a good thing for us that Jesus has left. It means that His work is finished and salvation is here in Him.

John 14:21

We are not saved by works. The only way to keep the commandments of God is by the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who testifies that the commands of God are true. It is the Holy Spirit who gives us the power to do the commands of God. It is the Holy Spirit who opens our eyes to the truth of who we are and what we have done. He shows us Jesus as the hope for our sin and need. It is this work that causes us to love God: when we have seen His love for us. Have you seen the love of God? Has the Holy Spirit opened your eyes to see all God is and all God has done? If not, pray He will! If He has, then love God by keeping His commandments!

John 14:19-20

This internal religion is clear and powerful. Even after Christ is gone, the promise is that they will know Christ is in the Father and are connected to Christ. Again, this is the promise given for them as they prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is one of the hopes that Christ gives to His disciples and to us even today. We are connected internally to the one true and living God forever. Do you understand this connection that comes from God? Do you see how this is a hope for us, God's people?

John 14:18

One of the worst things to happen to a person throughout the history of the world is to be orphaned. In certain times, it meant that you had very few advantages or protections in life. You had to make your own way in a world where you needed help very much . This is a powerful statement from Jesus. He has brought these people away from their jobs and regular lives. Now He is going away. How important for them to know they are not being left alone. The Holy Spirit will connect Christians to Christ forever. If you have the Holy Spirit, you are forever connected to Christ.

John 14:17

Only the Christian knows the Holy Spirit because He dwells in us. The World does not know the Holy Spirit and cannot receive Him. This is why we can get so frustrated with folks. They have the same information as we do and yet they do not see the same thing we do. They are blinded to their need and the salvation that comes in Christ. This is why we need to pray for our lost friends, family, and neighbors. They might be blind, but the Holy Spirit can open their eyes and bring new birth. Are you praying for the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of your lost friends?

John 14:16

Here is a clear reference to the Trinity, the three persons of the godhead; one God in three persons equal in power and glory. The Helper is the Holy Spirit. He comes and works in us to apply all that Christ has done for His people. Christ came for a little while to be our Savior and then ascended into heaven. The Holy Spirit has been sent and will remain forever. The Holy Spirit gives us new birth (John 3). We are gifted by the spirit. We are maintained by the spirit. We are taught by the Spirit through the Word of God. You are never alone. Your God is never far away.

John 14:15

Talk is cheap. It is one thing to say you love someone. It is quite another to show that love by your actions. Jesus is very clear here. If you love Him, you will do those things which He commands. We have to remember who is saying this to us. It is our perfect and holy God. His commandments are perfect and good for us. They are not a burden. They keep us from sin and the burden that comes from the consequences of sin. Have you considered your love for Jesus? Are you keeping His commandments? Are you striving to know His commandments?

John 14:13-14

This is not a secret magic formula. It is a powerful truth! Do you believe this? Do you honestly believe that if you ask God in the name of Christ He will do it so that God might be glorified? Are you praying for the salvation of someone? Do you believe the promise that God will work? Do you pray like God is going to work? Are we beating down the door of heaven in prayer for the good things we know we are to be praying for?

John 14:12

We are called to follow Jesus. We are called to believe in Jesus and to follow Him. If you believe in Jesus, you will do the things He wants. You will do the things He has told you to do in His Word. In the power of Christ the Church has gone forth into the world. Whole people groups and nations have been converted to Christ. He went to the Father, but sent the Holy Spirit to power and bless the work of the church. Do you believe? If you do, are you doing the works of Jesus?

John 14:11

Jesus appeals to His own authority. Believe what He has said or believe in what He has done. Both are based in Jesus. We do not believe in grace without Jesus. Jesus is the key for all we do. If you read your Bible, you are not reading for knowledge that is not connected to Jesus. We are Christo-centric (Christ-Centered). Our worship, our salvation, and our lives are all centered on Christ because of what He has said and what He has done. Where is your life? Is Christ at the Center?

John 14:10

I am in the Father and the Father is in me. The doctrine of the Trinity is a great mystery, but it is also a great truth. The Father is in Jesus and Jesus is in the Father. They are one God in three persons, equal in power and glory. There is an eternal and unbreakable connection between the three persons of the Trinity. They are one. Jesus is one with the Father and the Father is one with Jesus. If you know Jesus then you know God.

John 14:9

If you know Jesus, you know God. The Devil has historically tried to misinform and mislead people about the true nature of who Jesus Christ is as the Son of God. There are many who will take away either His divinity or His humanity. Here the divinity of Jesus is being confirmed. To see Jesus is to see the Father. This means that He is God. The whole Gospel depends on Jesus being real God. If you lose this then you lose salvation through Jesus.

John 14:8

It would be rude if we asked for more proof when enough proof had already been given! God the Father has sent His Son Jesus to come to earth as proof of God's love. Do you sometimes find yourself asking for more proof instead of simply believing the truth that has already been given to you? We are called to walk by faith and not by sight in this world. You are called to believe. Are you believing what has been given to you? You will not have every question answered, but you have enough answers that you should believe in Jesus and His salvation.
