How can Jesus and the Father be one? What does Jesus mean when He says this? Jesus is actually speaking truth to the religious leaders. It will be another example of them not seeing the truth in Jesus. It will be the reason they crucify Jesus; He claimed to be the Son of God (John 5:18).
So how is Jesus one with the Father? The Westminster Shorter Catechism says “there are three persons in the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and in glory.” Jesus and the Father are one because they are one God.
The Doctrine of the Trinity is to large and complicated to try and explain in a short devotional. However, it is something that we should seek to understand as Christians. The early church saw the importance of this doctrine and it is in the early creeds. Heresies throughout the church age often deal with some misunderstanding of who Christ is in relation to His being God or man.
Here the problem is simple unbelief. The religious leaders had gone so far away from true religion they could not see their God even when He was right in front of them. It is important that in all we do with church and religion that we never lose Christ!
