Even though they do not know it, Jesus is preparing them for what is about to happen. In a little while He will be betrayed, arrested, beaten, and condemned to the cross, but this would not be the end of the story. Jesus came to die and arise again. He came to conquer sin and death. This He would do by His death and resurrection from the dead. He was going to return, and in doing so He would declare His victory. It is in this resurrection that we find hope for today and eternity. It is because of who Jesus Christ is and what He has done for us.
